Town of Stuart Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Ordinance

Overview

Stuart, located at the "Gateway to the Blue Ridge Parkway" is surrounded by scenic views, winding roads, and picturesque beauty. It was settled in the late 1880's, and is named in honor of one of the regions most notable celebrities, Civil War General J.E.B. Stuart. A defining characteristic of Stuart is its location in the Crooked Road, connecting major heritage music venues through-out the Appalachian and Blue Ridge region.

Approach

The development of a Comprehensive Plan and related Subdivision and Zoning regulations are vital components in Stuart's revitalization efforts. A recent boundary adjustment increased its total land area by almost 400%. This Plan will guide land use decisions during the next 20 years. In anticipation of future development pressures and the need for better land use controls, new Zoning and Subdivision regulations were developed for alignment with the new Plan.
