County of Isle of Wight Zuni Urgent Needs Grant
Overview
The Zuni community in Isle of Wight County was devastated by flooding from Hurricane Floyd, rising swamps, tornadoes and high winds. Approximately 84 housing units were damaged by floodwaters and the public water system was impacted with serious damage and contamination. Sixty-two property owners were required to rehabilitate their homes, substantially reconstruct the units or vacate their homes and relocate elsewhere. Seventeen households sought relief by participating in the FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) for buyout or property elevation. The County secured an Urgent Needs grant of $700,000 from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development to assist households address housing needs and make improvements to the community's water system. These resources combined with an IPR grant of $179,200 and County funds provided relief and recovery assistance in the affected area.
Approach
Community Planning Partners assisted the County in securing the recovery funds, facilitating public meetings and participation, project implementation and successful project closeout.
